PH Nuclear Institute at the 2020 National Science and Technology Week

Highlighting the indispensable role of science in the country’s rise from the pandemic, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) joins hands with the DOST and its line agencies in the virtual celebration of the 2020 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) from November 23 to 29.

With the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya: Sandigan ng Kalusugan, Kabuhayan, Kaayusan at Kinabukasan”, the 2020 NSTW will highlight technologies that focus on addressing pressing problems while responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and helping the economy and society adjust to the new normal. These virtual exhibits and activities were divided into four thematic clusters, namely Kalusugan, Kabuhayan,Kaayusan, and Kinabukasan.

Throughout the week, guestscan have a virtual visit to the DOST-PNRI through an online “field trip” and have a closer look at the Institute’s state-of-the-art radiation processing facilities, environmental radiation monitoring stations, and nuclear analytical technique laboratories. The virtual tours will be available at the DOST Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PNRIDOST)

To underscore the importance of regulating nuclear and radiation activities for public safety, the DOST-PNRI will also host a webinar titled “Regulating Nuclear Facilities and Activities in the Philippines” under theKaayusancluster on November 28 from 1-3PM. Speakers areDOST-PNRI Director Dr. Carlo A. Arcilla and DOST-PNRI Regulatory Chief Mr. Alan M. Borras.

Also, part of the Institute’s 2020 NSTWcelebration is the NucleART 2.0 Digital Poster Making Contest which ran from November 2-18. The top ten entries will be posted at the DOST-PNRI Facebook page on 23-27 November for fans and art enthusiasts to vote for their favorite digital poster promoting the benefits of nuclear science and technology in daily life and its contributions to national development.

Paving the way for all of these PNRI-organized events is The Smarty Challenge as a build-up activity for the2020 NSTWcelebration. The Challenge consists of a series of weekly interactivepuzzles and problem-solving activities related to nuclear science and technology and about DOST-PNRI. At the end of the three-week challenge, three overall winners selected through a random number generator bagged the cash prize and tokens.

The NSTW, previously celebrated every third week of July, was recently moved every fourth week of November by virtue of Proclamation 780 signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
