DOST-NAST to conduct earth science forum, “treasure hunt” at 2021 NSTW celebration

It’s time to awaken the inner explorer in you, as the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is gearing up for a day of learning and adventure this coming 25 November 2021 at 03:00 PM via the Zoom platform.

Two events by DOST-NAST are in store for this year’s National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration from 22–28 Nov 2021 under the theme “Aghám at Teknolohíya: Tugón sa Hámon ng Panahón” (Science and Technology: Response to the Challenge of the Time).

Three renowned Filipino scientists will be sharing their knowledge and experiences in the field of earth science to enhance the awareness of the youth participants and even encourage them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).

Specific topics will be presented on geology by Dr. Betchaida Payot of the University of the Philippines Diliman, about earthquakes by Jeffrey Perez of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), and climates by Acd. Fernando Siringan of DOST-NAST.

DOST-NAST will also be organizing a “treasure hunt” using the free Philippine Science Heritage Center (PSHC) virtual tour mobile app that is downloadable at Google Play and Apple Store. The mechanics of the contest will be announced after the open forum on the same date.

The PSHC was established to serve as a public resource center for the works, ideas, and other achievements of Filipino scientists who have significantly contributed to the global advancement of science and technology (S&T). The center features holograms of notable Filipino scientists with the works and contributions that can be viewed by visitors to add on to their stock knowledge on different fields of science.

The NSTW is an annual event that aims to bring S&T closer to the people by letting them experience the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in improving the people’s quality of life, protecting the environment, and contributing to national development.
